The Scoop from Tracy Schueller

As I finalize our group reservations for Oberammergau in 2020, the old adage “time flies” really hits home.  I think about the last group I took to the Great Passion Play…can it REALLY be almost 10 years ago?! We had so much fun exploring this small community and learning about their dedication and commitment to the performance. People from all over the world attend and it provides a great opportunity to meet those from far and near.

I still remember all the laughs while dining on different culinary treats, riding the gondola with those from flat parts of the world (and the look of fear on their face), and enjoying  this all day performance, even though most of us didn't know German. But the costuming and the
interpretations made up for the language barrier. It’s definitely a trip of a lifetime. So Personalized is offering  2 great itineraries for this special engagement and we want to make sure our travelers don’t miss the opportunity to join me on this tour.  Because of early deadlines and vast popularity, please call us if you are even slightly entertaining the idea of seeing Europe during this special time.

It’s on my calendar so I am inviting you to please call us and secure your space NOW. More information about the two trips can be found below!

 Sincerely,

Last month’s winner was Nancy S.! She correctly guessed that Bob and Nancy were in San Diego in front of the Coronado Bay Bridge.

APFELKUCHEN: GERMAN APPLE CAKE

Kuchen, the German word for cake, is used in other languages as the name for several different types of savory or sweet desserts. Most Kuchen have eggs and flour as common ingredients while also including some form of sweetener and/or fat. In Germany it is a common tradition to invite friends over to one's house or to a cafe between noon and evening to drink coffee and eat Kuchen.

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 cup orange juice
  • 2-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 4 cups thinly sliced peeled apples (about 4 to 5 apples)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • Confectioners' sugar, optional
Instructions:
1. Combine the first three ingredients; set aside.
2. In a large bowl, beat eggs and sugar. Combine oil and orange juice and add alternately with dry ingredients to egg mixture. Beat until smooth; add vanilla and beat well.
3. Pour half of the batter into a greased and floured tube pan. Arrange half the apples over the batter. Combine cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle half over the apples. Top with remaining batter, apples and cinnamon/sugar.
4. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 1 hour before removing from pan. Cool, apple side up, on a wire rack. Sprinkle top with confectioners' sugar if desired. Yield: 12-16 servings.
Why did the residents of Oberammergau vow to perform a play depicting the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ?

It's almost Tax Day! How do you plan on spending your tax refund?

"Depending on your financial situation, a refund offers a rare opportunity to improve your financial standing, according to Experian. Here are the credit reporting agency's top tips for how to put this money to good use:

1. Pay down debt
Because of the particularly high interest rates that many credit cards carry, financial advisors recommend focusing on paying off this debt before other types of loans.

2. Save money in an emergency fund
Nearly one-quarter of all Americans have zero dollars in an emergency fund, according to a report by Bankrate.com. Greg McBride, Bankrate's chief financial analyst, recommends stashing at least a six-month cushion to cover anything from a dental bill to a car repair.

3. Buy something
If you've been saving throughout the year,
treat yourself to a trip with Go Personalized Tours. It might just be the break you need!
